Vena Cava – The End
Respect to all those SAHM who manage to be productive in sewing, the most impressive of which is Katie. I have less time to sew now being at home than I did when I was a full-time working mom!
For my Vena Cava dress, I had ordered fabric on the internet. The picture showed the black leopard fabric with a faint glitter:
I recognize that the fabric is hard to photograph. I tried to generate a picture that would show the sequins in all their glory but all my shots were similar to the one above. So take my word for it when I say that these sequins were way less discrete than on the picture. The first though I had was that this fabric would qualify for the Ugly Fabric Contest on Pattern Review. The wrong side, however, was exactly what I had in mind. So I opted to be bold -at least that’s what it feels to me- and I’ll be wearing a dress with sequins on the inside. It’ll be my dirty little secret:
Do you see my post-pregnancy belly ring? No? Then I made a point. I’ve worn the dress out once already and gotten compliments from men and women alike. Here you see it with a tank underneath but it can also be worn without it if more decolleté is desired. However, at least with this kind of fabric (viscose jersey), I’d advise wearing it with spanx or laser cut underwear to avoid VPL.
I made some modifications on the final dress, mostly on the sleeves that were too dropped for my taste. So now I have cap sleeves in front and almost no sleeves in the back:
Also, instead of staystitching, I used interfacing tape and used bias strips of silk organza on all points that needed reinforcing.
And this is what happened to the muslin, for the first time ever:
This dress was lying around cut and ready to sew approximately 8 weeks so I really don’t know when I’ll be posting my next finished object. I still thoroughly enjoy reading my blog roll and I get a lot of ideas and have a lot of admiration for all of you sewing bees out there!
It’s beautiful! I’d never have guessed you used the wrong side. The print came through really nicely.
Thanks for the shout out. Now I’d better hit the sewing room to maintain my reputation. 🙂

Looks fab! are the sequins itchy? or was it lined? Good Idea tho.

The sequins are not itchy but I always have a couple sticking to my skin when I take off the dress. It’s not lined.
