German engineering

January 20, 2011

If you’re a hobby sewer that makes tons of jackets, all pad stitched with hair canvas per hand, if you have the bucks and room, you’re going to have to want or at least begin to have wet dreams about this pad stitching machine; if you’re not (like me), this is useless knowledge but knowledge nonetheless, right? It makes pad stitching with hair canvas as easy as basting (click on the picture to see it at work). And of course, it’s German engineering!

I’m quite willing to believe this German thing does a good job :-). But the point of hair canvas really is to get a perfect job from doing it by hand, from lovingly but slowly shaping the canvas just so as you go. So if you’re going to run it through a machine, why not do the really modern thing and use good-quality fusible interfacing?

In the video the machine appears to shape the pieces too. That being said, I’m by no means a specialist of pad stitching. In fact, I’ve read tons about it but I’ve never done it. I’m kind of afraid of it lol
